RESEARCH INTERESTS
In February 1979 he moved to the Technical University of Catalunya (UPC) in Barcelona, Spain, where he was hired as an Associated Professor on Structural Mechanics at the School of Civil Engineering. He became a Full Professor with tenure on June 1983. From March 1983 to March 1989 he was the Director of the School of Civil Engineering at UPC.
On March 1987 he founded CIMNE (International Center for Numerical Methods in Engineering, www.cimne.com), a research center specialized in the development and application of numerical methods in engineering. From March 1987 to June 2022 he was the Executive Vice-President and Director of CIMNE.
Has supervised 49 Ph.D. Thesis and 95 Master Thesis . 30 of his former students are now full professors in Universities in Spain (13), USA (4), UK (2) and Latin America (11). He has had a significant impact in the creation of new scientific groups in cooperation with his former students.
In 1989 he was the founder and first President of the Spanish Association for Numerical Methods in Engineering (SEMNI, www.cimne.upc.es/semni).
He was one of the founders and first Vice-President (1993-95) of the European Community on Computational Methods in Applied Sciences (ECCOMAS, www.eccomas.org)
His research activities have spread over a range of multidisciplinary fields which he has contributed relevant theories and methods of scientific and industrial relevance.
The above research lines have been developed in the framework of over 400 RTD projects carried out in cooperation with the main engineering companies in Spain and worldwide. Some 120 of these projects have been developed in the framework of EC programmes.
In parallel with the RTD activities, Eugenio Oñate has organized as chair person 45 international congresses on topics closely related with the above RTD lines. See list of congresses in www.cimne.com .
He has published 302 papers in scientific journals. He has written 4 text books and is the editor of 52 books in different topics of Computational Engineering Mechanics. He is the editor of three scientific journals (one of which is published by Springer) and 3 books series in Computational Mechanics. He is the author of 62 chapters in books, 40 monographs, 435 papers in conference proceedings and 230 research reports .
He has 4770 citations in the field of Computational Engineering Science. He has an h index of 42 and 19 papers with more than 50 citations.
He is regularly invited to deliver Keynote (Plenary) Lectures in the main International Conferences in Computational Engineering Science (25 Plenary Lectures and 30 Keynote lectures in the last 20 years).
His research work has been recognized in many Prizes and Awards.
]]>Fernando Salazar received the Degree on Civil Engineering from the Technical University of Madrid in 2002, specializing in Hydraulics. He has worked in several dam and hydraulic projects, as well as in the development of emergency plans and hazard-potential classification of dams (being Mequinenza and Riba-Roja, in the Ebro river, among them). He is working for CIMNE since 2009, where he is the current Project Development Director.
He obtained his PhD at the UPC in 2017, qualified as Excellent Cum Laude. It focused on the application of machine learning techniques to dam monitoring data analysis. In this field, he was winner of an International Challenge organized by Verbund, the greatest hydropower company in Austria.
He has been involved in several research projects in the fields of hydraulics, dam engineering and dam safety. He is author or co-author of 15 papers in scientific journals, and around 50 contributions in conference proceedings.

]]>CIMNE’s headquarters are located at the heart of the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) in Barcelona. CIMNE has also premises at different buildings in several campus of the UPC. CIMNE has also offices in Spain (Madrid, Terrassa and Ibiza). In 2005 CIMNE started its international expansion and since then has created the following international branches: CIMNE Latinoamerica (Non-profit Foundation in Santa Fe, Argentina); CIMNE USA (Non-profit Corporation in Washington DC, USA); CIMNE Singapore (Non-profit Corporation in Singapore) and CIMNE Beijing (China).
CIMNE employs some 250 scientists and engineers who work in the different offices of CIMNE around the world. CIMNE has also established a network of 30 Classrooms in partnership with Universities in Spain and 11 Latin American countries.
The research and technology development (RTD) activities of CIMNE cover a wide spectrum of topics ranging from classical engineering fields such as civil, mechanic, environmental, naval, marine and offshore, food, telecommunication and bio-medical engineering, computer sciences and applied sciences such as material sciences bio-medicine, computational physics, nature, social and economic sciences and multimedia sciences, among others.

Since November 2011 I work in the International Centre for Numerical Methods in Engineering (CIMNE) in Madrid developing research projects in Civil Engineering. The projects focus on the possibilities of using particle methods for the calculation of the behaviour of granular materials, specifically, the Particle Finite Element Method (PFEM) and the Discrete Element Method (DEM).
During my years at the CIMNE I studied the Master of Numerical Methods in Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) and my PhD thesis entitled "Numerical analysis of railway ballast behaviour using the Discrete Element Method", presented on October 6, 2017, also at the UPC. The thesis, awarded the XVI Talgo Prize for Technological Innovation, was focused on the application of the Discrete Elements Method to the calculation of the behaviour of railway ballast.
His industrial work experience is based in his technical background and his project management skills. He spent 3 years in the software industry, 3 years in the home appliances industry and 4 years in the aeronautical sector. He did his PhD as part-time student at CIMNE from 2003 to 2011. From 2008 he is the responsible of the aeronautical group of CIMNE, and a researcher in the Optimization and Artificial Intelligence field. He has published 9 scientific papers in JCR journals. He has 3 citations and a h-index of 1 (Source: Web of Knowledge).
He is the coordinator of the Iberia East Pilot Center of ERCOFTAC (www.ercoftac.org), and the Spanish National Contact Point of EASN (www.easn.net). He also collaborates with BAIE (Barcelona Aeronautica I Espai, www.baie.cat), the Catalan association of aeronautical industry
Currently, I am full professor of shipbuilding technology at the Higher Technical School of Naval Architects and Offshore Engineers (ETSIN) of the Technical University of Madrid and the Deputy Director of Institutional Relations.
I conduct my research in collaboration with the Model Basin Research Group at ETSIN (CEHINAV) and the International Center for Numerical Methods in Engineering (CIMNE). My research career has focused on developing computational models for fluid-structure interaction analysis and their application to the design and verification of ships, platforms, and marine structures.
I am the author of more than 35 articles published in first-tier international journals, have presented over 80 papers at international conferences, and have participated in more than 25 European or international research projects.
Additionally, I have been the promoter and co-founder of Compass IS, a company specializing in engineering design, and Scipedia, the developer of the platforms Scipedia.com and BIM TeamUp.

My personal objective is to understand how to add value from the I+D to the enterprise and create products that can enter into competition in the international technological market.
Specialties: My field of knowledge is about developing great software for Computer Simulation in Engineering including Structural Analysis, Mesh generation, CFD, etc.
1994-2001: Studies of Civil Engineering (Bachelor and Master Degree) at the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC).
2001-2004: Project engineer at Pedelta S.L. Role as main project engineer in the design of bridges, footbridges and other special structures.
2004-2008: Doctoral studies in the Structural Analysis program of the Strength of Materials and Structural Engineering Department, of the UPC. These studies were conducted with a fellowship provided by the International Centre for Numerical Methods in Engineering (CIMNE).
2008: Dissertation of the PhD: “Micro-mechanical simulation of composite materials using the serial/parallel mixing theory” supervised by Dr. Sergio Oller.
2008-2009: Visiting scientist and Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) department of the West Virginia University (WVU). The main task conducted in this period is the coordination of the “Resilient Tunnel Project” sponsored by Homeland Security (budget > $5,000,000)
2009-2014: Visiting professor at the Science and Nautical Engineering Department (DCEN) of the UPC. The teaching activity is conducted at the School of Nautical Studies (FNB) and at the School of Civil Engineering (ETSECCPB).
